Articulation Disorders
Speech sound errors which do not change in different word contexts. For example, "Johnny says the 'L' sound in 'ball", and in 'doll', but never when the 'L' is at the beginning of the word such as 'laugh', and 'like'". These errors occur during the production of isolated speech sounds (phonemes) and are typically misarticulated at the syllable and word levels as well. Misarticulations can include one or more of the following:
- Substitutions: when a different sound is produced instead of the correct sound
- Omissions: the sound is left out of the word
- Distortions: the sound is produced with improper use of airflow or oral mechanics
